3. PROGRESS IN THOUGHT CONTROL

From the May 27, 2007 Los Angeles Times:

“The amount spent on the ‘alternative out-of-home media’ advertising category, which includes digital screens in stores, movie theaters and elevators (but not roadside billboards), grew 27% in 2006 to $1.69 billion, according to PQ Media Research.

“Everyone is saying this is the next frontier,’ said George Wishart, global managing director of Nielsen In-Store, which began measuring the audience for these sorts of ads earlier this month.

“Last year, Dean Dunlap, now the associate media director for DGWB, bought time on screens in several Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores for Southern California Land Rover dealers.

“We felt that it was another way to get people to think about Land Rover as they start their day,” he said.

Younger Americans are quicker to embrace ad-filled digital screens in public places, said Stuart Fischoff, professor emeritus of media psychology at Cal State L.A. They’re accustomed to having digital music players, PDAs and cellphones at their fingertips, and they “don’t want to be alone with their thoughts.”

4. CAN WE GET TWO AMENS

New black-and-white BOMP! t-shirt has a quote from the late, great Greg Shaw on the back: “We are trying to preserve the best of alternative music culture from the creeping mediocrity that always seeks to envelop it.”

Available from the Bomp! store

Along those lines: In the spirit of sharing and psychedelic outreach, Plastic Crimewave (aka Steve Krakow) has made his first mixtape podcast for Arthur. It’s 30 minutes of “hideously rare” gems and mellow voiceover, made with love. Download it here:

5. IDEAS AND THEIR CONSEQUENCES

Adam Curtis is the deeply brilliant English filmmaker/philosopher whose BBC television series “The Power of Nightmares” about the intertwined, mutually supporting histories of American neo-conservativism and militant Islam has still not aired on American television. (Its first two hours have been distributed as part of Wholphin, though, and you can watch it online via youtube or googlevideo.)

“The Trap: What Happened to Our Dream of Freedom,” his new series about how a radical economic theory of human behavior has directly worsened our lives, is unlikely to be broadcast here either. But some people are keeping it available online.

Check out Episode 1 of “The Trap” at googlevideo.

6. REGARDING PLANT-HUMAN INTERACTION…

This just in via author and Arthur contributor Erik Davis. Benny Shanon, author of “Antipodes of the Mind: Charting the Phenomenology of the Ayahuasca Experience” (Oxford University Press, 2002), is Professor of Psychology at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and holder of the Mandel Chair in Cognitive Psychology and Education. He will be speaking this November at “METAGEUM ’07 –EXPLORING THE MEGALITHIC MIND,” an interdisciplinary international conference in Malta. This is how he describes the current direction of his research:

“I sincerely believe that the origin of religion (and perhaps art as well) is tied to altered states of mind, which in many places involves the use of psychoactive plants. While my expertise is with Amazonian ayahuasca, I actually have researched this issue also in conjunction with my own land, and concerning the origins of the Hebrew (before Jewish, that is) religion. There are also similar narratives about religions in India, classical Greece and the early steps of Christianity into Europe.

“My own story in these matters runs (in an abstract sketch) as follows: The ayahuasca potion works only when two plants are combined – using only the plant that contains DMT (the principal psychoative ingredient) won’t do as the human body has enzymes that immediately counter it; the second plant is necessary to counter the natural inhibition. How people discovered this is, obviously, a great riddle. Obviously, in the semi-arid landscape of the Holy Land the plants of the Amazonian rainforest are not to be found, but it turns out (my own discovery) that here in the Mideast there are two botanically distinct but chemically analogous plants. After looking through all sorts of botanical, ethnographical and old textual data I’ve come to the hypothesis (admittedly speculative, but I seriously believe in it) that the Hebraic religion too originated in the use of psychotropic plants…”

Dr. Shanon’s paper on this subject will be published in March, 2008 in the first issue of the new English journal, “Time & Mind: The Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture.”

7. HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY

From “Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic” by Chalmers Johnson (Metropolitan, 2007):

“Joseph Stiglitz, the Nobel prize-winning economist, and his colleague at Harvard Linda Bilmes have tried to put together an estimate of the real costs of the Iraq war. They calculate that it will cost about $2 trillion. This figure is several orders of magnitude larger than what the Bush administration publicly acknowledges…

“I believe that to maintain our empire abroad requires resources and commitments that will inevitably undercut our domestic democracy and in the end produce a military dictatorship or its civilian equivalent. The founders of our nation understood this well and tried to create a form of government–a republic–that would prevent this from occurring. But the combination of huge standing armies, almost continuous wars, military Keynesianism, and ruinous military expenses have destroyed our republican structure in favor of an imperial presidency. We are on the cusp of losing our democracy for the sake of keeping our empire. Once a nation is started down that path, the dynamics that apply to all empires come into play–isolation, overstretch, the uniting of forces opposed to imperialism, and bankruptcy.”

“It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there”

Bob Dylan said that,

2. ARTHUR NO. 5 (“HOORAY FOR EMPIRE! – USA #1 WITH A BULLET” cover w/ David Cross as crazed jingoist god-blessed S.U.V.-driving soccer Mom) IS SOLD OUT. This was the issue we published back in June 2003 when oh 90% of the USA was in favor of invading Iraq. Yep. They’re gone forever, peacenik fanboy. That said, you can download the entire issue in PDF (11mb) here:

4. ARTHUR RETURNS IN JULY

“There is no other periodical I look more forward to arriving than the new Arthur”

Rick Rubin

“Arthur is really something singular and much-needed”

Dave Eggers

“The American counterculture’s answer to the New Yorker”

The Guardian

“The central voice of the new scene”

Will Hermes, The New York Times, 2006

“[Arthur’s first 25 issues featured] an admirable chunk of visionary muckraking and alternative journalism… This was not Spin or Blender’s flashy, tastemaking colleague. More like its anarchist brother.” – Audra Schroeder, Austin Chronicle, 2007

“Arthur was oversized, free, colorful, patchouli-scented but whip-smart, unapologetically political, sometimes silly, often anarchist and always willing to listen to voices way, way outside the mainstream. Above all, it was prophetic, usually about two years ahead of the rest of the country in its loves and obsessions.” – Keach Hagey, Village Voice, 2007

“[Arthur] has been busy streaming the revelations and imperatives of the New New Age into pop culture, where the kids can get at it… Arthur has become the place where the ideas meet the music; where Derek Jensen’s freefall apocalyptics can sit with total aptness beside a piece on nouveau hippie swooners Brightblack Morning Light. The same issue begins with a column about mint tea and ends with a list of ‘sensitive weapons’ (e.g., shotgun shells taped to the end of a BB-gun barrel) for use when the grid collapses and Devendra Banhart fans are called upon to defend their homes and woolly hats…. Arthur has saturated itself in the ’60s, via features on the Weather Underground, the MC5, the 1967 March on the Pentagon, and also in the post-psychedelic slant of the music coverage. But there’s nothing regressive here. From the freaky folkers to the acid rockers, Arthur bands have their eyes on the advancing historical horizon…” – James Parker, Boston Phoenix, 2006

6. AND YOU WILL KNOW THEM BY THEIR GAIT

From the May 22 New York Times on a dude who runs a popular NYC store selling police hats:

Although police agencies from various countries may wear different hats, Mr. Vega, a longtime observer of officers, said that there are qualities common to members of nearly all forces, no matter how far-flung. He said he has about an 80 percent success rate in spotting [non-uniformed] officers based on the way they walk and talk.

“I know the swagger,” he said. “In their eyes you can see it.”

Hey lady,

1. NICE WAR, CAN WE HAVE ANOTHER?

With yesterday’s appointment of an official “War Czar” by President Bush and a USA-Iran war apparently imminent, efforts to reduce US militarism have become even more urgent.

Arthur still has a couple hundred copies in stock of Josephine Foster’s 18-track, multi-artist compilation SO MUCH FIRE TO ROAST HUMAN FLESH, and would love for demand to rise to the level where we could go back to press on this. You can place an order using PayPal direct from Arthur at

http://www.arthurmag.com/news/index.php

At Josephine’s direction, we’ve distributed the initial proceeds from this benefit album to

* The American Friends Service Committee’s National Youth & Militarism Program

* Iraq Veterans Against War

* Veterans for Peace

* Coalition Against Militarism in our Schools

This comp features new or never-before-released songs. Office favorites, fwiw, include Michael Hurley’s “A Little Bit of Love For You,” Charlie Nothing’s “Fuck You and Your Stupid Wars,” Feathers’ gorgeous “Dust”  and MVEE’s cover of Neil Young’s “Powderfinger.” But the whole thing is good. If you’re in doubt, preview it at:

6. THANK YOU, LESBIAN DEATH ANGELS

from http://www.bilerico.com/2007/05/003107.php

The Lesbian Death Angels, concerned that Rev. Falwell’s followers will misattribute the cause of their leader’s demise to their antigod or to some weenie group like Soulforce, have announced that, in a mass worldwide action, they hexed at 10:30 am today and that the subject of their hex was the Rev. Jerry Falwell. In other words, they are claiming to be responsible for Jerry’s death and wish the world to know that they are proud of it to boot.

“Falwell earned being hexed well into his next life with his post-9/11 comments on that event’s cause made in a conversation with fellow telehatemonger Pat Robertson on Robertson’s 700 Club broadcast”, noted collective member Connie L. Ingus. “Too often when tyrants die — particularly spiritual ones — their past is glossed over into sweetness and light that doesn’t begin to resemble the truth of what they did. Frankly, a heart attack hex was too nice. We should’ve added an addendum to make him come back as an innocent Muslim imam who gets ratted out by a rival faction and ends up in the U.S. rendition program, never to see the light of day again — either that or as an out gay youth in Iran.”

The LDA is the international body of pro-choice radical lesbians who meet in secret and not-so-secret cells, covens, and as individual practitioners each Tuesday morning to try to set the world back on its axis one hex at a time. Previous targets have included rapists who found themselves strangely compelled to walk into police stations and turn themselves in and others. This is one of the few successful hexes they have publicly taken credit for.

“Proselytizing is usually so rude”, said Ms. Ingus. “Under normal circumstances, we’re content just with the effects of our work. Lesbians who are meant to find us simply will. The Goddess is powerful enough to get that job done without our help.”

The LDA feels no compunctions about the pain this announcement might cause the Reverend’s family, as the Falwells have benefited from and participated in their patriarch’s long campaign of hate without so much as a public hint of guilt for all the pain and death they have contributed to.

The LDA is still contemplating their next target for early karmic justice. The list of potentials is long. They wish to thank the Goddess for her swift response today.

We grew our own,

Arthur Lives Again

Issue 25 won’t be the last!

This particular Arthur saga has a few chapters left in it. Despite being declared dead by co-founder and editor Jay Babcock back in February, the much-mourned Arthur magazine announced its return earlier this month to the already too-small world of long-form counterculture journalism. Babcock’s negotiations with publisher Laris Kreslins to buy out Kreslins’ half of the mag had reached a seemingly hopeless impasse, but a recent breakthrough finally pushed the deal through.

“The main thing is that he came back to the table and we reached a deal, and I got loans from friends and family which allowed me to buy him out,” says Babcock, who has run the magazine from his home in Atwater Village since its inception in 2002. “I have now gained 100 percent control of Arthur, and I intend to resume publishing the magazine as soon as all the financing is in order.”

Babcock denied rumors that Arthur had received last-minute financial help from some of its high-profile friends, among them Rick Rubin, Dave Eggers, and Matt Groening. “When I reached out, it was to a close circle of family and long, longtime friends,” he says. “We probably will do a benefit or two or auction off one-of-a-kind items to help me pay back all the people who loaned me money.”

Founded in 2002, Arthur found success as a haven for long-form journalism and criticism that covered music, art, and politics with underground sensibilities. Editorial contributors have included Alan Moore, Byron Coley, and Thurston Moore. The magazine also spun off into a series of well-attended festivals, such as ArthurFest, which drew major acts such as Sonic Youth, Yoko Ono, and Sleater-Kinney.

Babcock is currently trying to get the publication’s momentum rolling again before he can set a date for the next issue. “It’s not time yet. All the ducks are getting in order, and then we’ll go for a swim,” he explains. Issue 26, which was all but completed before the negotiations breakdown, will never be published, and most of its features have either found homes at other publications or been posted on the magazine’s website. Nevertheless, his outlook remains optimistic.

“We’ll be back, bolder, brighter, bigger, and freer,” he jokes. “It’ll probably be a little more aggressive. We’ll name names. I think we’ve been pulling our punches to this point and we’re not gonna have to do that anymore.”   (Alfred Lee)

2. WITHOUT WHOM

A big public THANK YOU to Jason McGuire who has been working pro bono as Arthur’s attorney. He came to us in our time of need and offered to help out of the goodness of his heart. And then he did exactly what he said he would do. Thank you Jason for helping straighten out Arthur’s affairs — and for deejaying at our recent night of beer at Little Joy with the Built by Wendy sweethearts.

3. Q: WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? A: WELL…

Arthur is now considering proposals from investors so that we can do what we used to do on a bigger scale. Hang tight, we’re going as fast as we can.

4. MEANWHILE, BACK IN THE INTERCAVE…

Thanks to the efforts of Will Swofford and others, Arthur’s “Magpie” blog is now officially out of control. John Coulthart, Gabe Soria, Eden Batki, Paul Krassner, Steve K, Charles Potts and others have all been posting recently. And this afternoon, we posted Arthur’s first “commissioned” podcast — a half-hour audio mixtape put together for the computer listener by Plastic Crimewave of Chicagoland back in frigid February. Hideously rare gems and mellow voiceover await you at:

* Pre-order sales for our “The Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda” film DVD reissue out June 1, 2007 have been (shall we say) very strong, and we are anticipating a quickie sellout of this widely acclaimed package produced by Will Swofford of Saturnalia. Details on the 1968 Ira Cohen-Angus Maclise psychedelic knockout film are available at:

7. AH YES, THE MAGIC AND MYSTERY OF HUMAN/PLANT COMMUNICATION…

“Psychobotany: Revolutionary Breakthroughs in Human/Plant Communication”

proudly supported by MACHINE PROJECT & The CENTER for TACTICAL MAGIC

May 12 – June 16

MACHINE PROJECT

1200 D North Alvarado Street

Los Angeles, CA 9002

213-483-8761

Opening Reception:

8pm May 12

Featuring a presentation by MOLLY FRANCES (Arthur Magazine’s “NEW HERBALIST” columnist)

Psychobotany: psycho (from the Greek psyche meaning mind or soul); botany (the study of plants).

Psychobotany cultivates a cultural terrain that includes a wide array of efforts at human/plant communication. Artists, scientists, subcultures, religions, activists, and visionaries all share plots in the field of Psychobotany. Combining elements of scientific truth, spiritual beliefs, aesthetic savvy, and social expression, Psychobotany is a fertile ground where the diverse cultural roots of human/plant communication can take hold.

Psychobotany blazes a meandering trail between the strict constraints of objective, peer-reviewed, rationalism and the unrestrained embrace of uncritical idealism. Along the way, one can expect to find military scientists rubbing shoulders with druids; tree-sitters cavorting with tech wizards; and conceptual artists conspiring with herbalists.

EXHIBIT FEATURES…

“Tea Leaf-lets and Potion Corner” by Molly Frances

Molly Frances (author of Arthur Magazine’s New Herbalist column) encourages communion with our mysterious herb friends, so small and unassuming, yet so powerful. For the Psychobotany exhibition, magical herbal elixirs, balmy tonics, sweet nervines, or simply tea will be shared with all. Additionally, “tea leaf-lets” and plant propaganda will lead visitors down the primrose path to herbal enlightenment.

“Vital Psigns” by The Center for Tactical Magic

Vital Psigns is a social experiment that seeks to address individual mind power and the potential for human/plant communication. The Vital Psigns installation includes three plants (positive, negative, and control) receiving equal soil, water, and light. Visitors are invited to take a few moments to relax in the presence of the plants and attempt to affect their growth using their mental energies. The cumulative effect on the plants over the course of the experiment is assessed at the close of the exhibition. Additionally, the Center of Tactical Magic (authors of Arthur Magazine’s Applied Magic[k] column)  presents a performance lecture exploring the magic and mystery of human/plant communication. Ranging from Moses’ consultation with a burning bush to the Pentagon’s recent development of “sentinel plants,” the CTM provides a brief history of plants as purveyors of knowledge. Audience members also participate in a live demonstration of extra-sensory perception mediated throug

h the cooperation of living plants. For more info: www.tacticalmagic.org

8. MEANWHILE, BACK IN NEW YORK CITY…

The artist/writers Sacha Jenkins SHR and Livingroom Johnston are teaming up to exhibit their works in a show entitled “Write On Bros.:  Paintings and Words by Sacha Jenkins SHR and the Legendary Livingroom Johnston.”  Hosted by the Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery, the show is up through Saturday, June 2, 2007.  The Eyejammie Fine Arts Gallery is located at 516 W.25th Street, Suite 306, in Manhattan.

“Write On Bros.” will be devoted — in Jenkins’s words — to works exploring “New York, slavery, clandestine emancipation, and the notion that God is one of us.”  For the most part, these works are paintings on canvas (Johnston) and on wood, canvas, and corrugated plastic (Jenkins).

Jenkins is variously known as the editorial director of Mass Appeal magazine and co-founder of the ego trip collective, whose most recent project was the reality television series “The White Rapper Show” for VH1.  His first show at Eyejammie, “Writers Convention:  A Collaborative Study of Pigments,” ran in November and December of 2005.

Johnston is a pioneering skateboarder, self-published novelist, and painter.  In 1989 he became the first black man to grace the cover of Transworld magazine.  Since March of 2004 he has written six well-received hand-made novels, beginning with “Harlem Remembers the Bronx.”  Johnston’s first one-man show of paintings occurred in New York in July of 2006.

5. LATEST ON ARTHUR IN ESTABLISHMENT PRESS BLAH BLAH BLAH

from Kevin Bronson’s “Buzz Bands” blog at the LATimes’ website:

Arthur magazine is back, but ArthurFest?

Herbalist L.A.’s counterculture core is smiling a little more this week with the news that Arthur magazine has come back from the dead. Whether that means the magazine will return to mounting its music and culture celebration, ArthurFest, remains to be seen.

Of course, the spirit of Arthur — champion of the freak folks, waver of the herbal flag and thorn in the side to all things bloated and consumptive — never went away, even after the magazine drowned in a pool of bad blood between co-founders Jay Babcock and Laris Kreslins in January.

Some of the material intended to run in the ill-fated issue No. 26 is being posted at the Arthur website. There’s still good reading from myriad contributors at the Magpie blog run by Babcock. And there is still fellowship to be found at the weekly Echo Park Social(ist) & Pleasure Club on Thursday nights at the Little Joy.

Babcock — now in hock after having bought out Kreslins’ share of the publication — also says an ArthurFest documentary is nearing completion; a “unique Arthur benefit performance” is in the works; and the mag’s compilation album “So Much Fire to Roast Human Flesh” (an anti-military recruiting benefit) is out.

And what about ArthurFest? “No comment,” Babcock says.

6. A MESSAGE FOR SPRINGTIME FROM LAVENDER DIAMOND

Recent post at lavenderdiamond.com:

APRIL 5, 2007

So,

today is already spring and we are home again, wherever that it is. Los Angeles is our home although really we feel an allegiance to the planet more than anything. We feel compelled to express gratitude above all. We can’t possibly imagine how things could be more beautiful. Well, I guess we can imagine how things could get better. So let’s imagine together- how things could get better–

1. End to all war. All wars on earth cease. This is a spontaneous act. Of course, it’s a long time coming. We recognize that every moment of war is creating unspeakable horror. So we ask and pray that all wars cease forever now.

2. Friendship between all people. This is hard to imagine but easy to imagine at the same time. How everyone could feel love for each other and the world would become an infinitely interesting place. But it already is! Imagine if everyone was your friend- what a world of celebration it would be!

3. Peace with the earth. An end to terracide. This will be amazing!! When humanity recognizes earth and all life as equal! Destroying the earth for profit will be a memory! Exploitation of earth will be considered suicide– and these ways will be lost in history–

4. Love is the unlimited source. Soon we disconnect our energy from fear and reconnect with love. Fear is a concept that is limited- like war and degradation. These are ideas and practices based on separation. The infinite source is celebration– communal and unknown. Solar and wind-powered.

Please feel free to share your visions for a peaceful future! Imagination is the key!

May love guide your path!

Peace forever and now-

love,

Lavender Diamond

There’ll be swinging and swaying,

2. IT’S APRIL 12 WHICH MEANS IT’S YURI’S NIGHT AND YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS.

From yurisnight.net:

“‘Let’s go!’ These were the words spoken by Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin as he embarked on the historic first manned space flight on 12 April 1961. Twenty years later on 12 April 1981, the US launched the first space shuttle flight. We think that’s something worth celebrating – so we do! Every year on April 12th, Yuri’s Night is celebrated all around the world – last year there were over 90 events or parties held in over 30 countries worldwide – and 2007 looks set to be even bigger. Whether in someone’s living room, a swinging nightclub or a world-class science museum, Yuri’s Night events all have one thing in common – people who are excited about space exploration and who want to join together to celebrate it.

“Urban Permaculture Design and Community: Cultivating Relational Intelligence and Practical Solutions for a Climate-Changing World”

Kat Steele

Friday, April 13 @ 5pm

Hear from a leader in the next generation of bay area permaculture designers as she shares perspectives on the evolving holistic design system and process. What is this design system? Why is it unique? How can it work in our suburbs and cities? How can Permaculture help address the issues of sustainability and community food security in our urban ecologies? Kat offers living and working examples of how projects integrate permaculture principles with green building, affordable housing, new technologies, green businesses and education, and social and economic justice! Hear how Permaculture can be used to best prepare and respond to the climatic and social transitions that we are facing today. In addition to her own work she’ll screen a short film about the innovative City Repair project of Portland, Oregon and lead a discussion about this evolutionary place-making phenomena

Katherine “Kat” Steele is a permaculture activist, designer, educator and founder the Urban Permaculture Guild in Oakland, California. She facilitates workshops on natural building and permaculture as well as publicly speaks about eco-social design, city repair and the power of placemaking. Trained in Ecovillage Design with the Findhorn Foundation of Scotland, Natural Building with Kleiwerks International and Permaculture Design with the Occidental Arts and Ecology Center she also holds an MA in Creative Arts from San Francisco State University. She presently serves on the board of two Bay Area Non Profit Organizations devoted to Peace, Justice and Sustainablity, the NorCal Chapter of Architects, Designers, Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR) in Berkeley and Bay Localize in Oakland.

“How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World”

Paul Stamets

Friday, April 13 @ 7:30pm

As we are now well engaged in the 6th Major Extinction (“6 X”) on planet Earth, our biosphere is quickly changing, eroding the life support systems that have allowed humans to ascend. Unless we put into action policies and technologies that can cause a course correction in the very near future, species diversity will continue to plummet, with humans not only being the primarily cause, but one of the victims. What can we do? I think fungi, particularly mushrooms, offer some powerful, practical solutions, that can be put into practice now.

Paul Stamets will discuss the evolution of mushrooms in ecosystems and how fungi can help heal environments. As environmental health and human health are inextricably interconnected, fungi offer unique opportunities that capitalize on mycelium’s diverse properties. Forest dwelling mushroom mycelium can achieve the greatest mass of any living organism – this characteristic is a testimonial to its inherent biological power.

Mushroom mycelium can replace chemical pesticides, break down toxic wastes, including petroleum-based products such as diesel, dioxins, and numerous other toxins into non-toxic forms. Understanding mycelium’s production of antibiotics is useful not only to compete with bacteria in nature but has also proven useful for treating animal diseases. Since bacterial can be vectors for viruses, interesting strategies emerge for supporting ecological health using mycelium as ecological medicine.

About a dozen species of medicinal mushrooms will be explored from a historical perspective leading to the clinical studies in which Paul is participating. Moreover, he will discuss his work with the U.S. Departments’ Bioshield BioDefense program, wherein his extracts were the first natural products from hundreds of thousands of samples tested found to be potent inhibitors of pox and other viruses. The field of mushroom-based medicines is rapidly expanding and this talk will show how mycomedicines can be incorporated in daily living to improve the quality of life while protecting the biosphere.

Arthur II: The Resurrection

posted: 10:54 AM, April 10, 2007

by Keach Hagey

Look what rose from the grave, just in time for Easter Sunday.

Arthur Magazine, pronounced dead by its editor a month ago, announced late last week that it would come back to life in the next few months.

The afterlife for the five-year-old music, culture, politics and drug magazine arrived courtesy of a “trusted intermediary” who got feuding partners Jay Babcock, the LA-based editor, and Laris Kreslins, the Philadelphia-based publisher, back to the negotiating table late last month. Babcock bought out Kreslins’ share with the help of loans from friends and family.

The deal marks the end of a tiff that started on Jan. 3, when Kreslins informed Babcock that he [Babcock] could no longer publish the bimonthly magazine, but some hard feelings remain.

“I shouldn’t have had to do this,” Babcock said. “Now I’m in deeper debt than before.”

Kreslins, who runs the tourism website movetophilly.com with his girlfriend, always disputed Babcock’s claims that the magazine was finished. His publishing company, Lime Publishing, seized control of Arthur’s assets, trademark and website, where it posted news that the bimonthly publication was on “indefinite hiatus.”

[…]

Kreslins’ bolt for the door locked up the magazine’s credit line and killed the momentum of Issue number 26, which was schedule to lead with a feature on Yoko Ono by Thurston Moore and Byron Coley and drop in time for the March South By Southwest Festival. The delay has meant much of that issue’s content was lost.

“Features walked,” Babcock said. “It’s a total shame.”

Some of content wandered over to other websites, such as The Seth Man’s piece on Sly and the Family Stone, found its way onto Julian Cope’s Head Heritage site. But others are now posted in blog, form on the magazine’s website, now controlled by Babcock.

But the cloud of hiatus had some silver linings. Friends “came out of the woodwork . .. and out of the woods,” to offer a hand to the magazine in its time of need, Babcock said. Plans for CD and DVD releases are in the works, as well as a book anthology of the best of the last five years’ journalism. The sold-out “Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda” DVD will be back in print June 1, and the next issue of the 50,000-circulation magazine will come out “as soon as necessary financing is in place,” he said.

[…]

Babcock speaks the language of legend when discussing the publishing pause. For the last few weeks, the magazine’s website has featured an Aubrey Beardley-esqe drawing of the Lady of the Lake from Arthurian legend with the caption “Arthur is in Avalon.” In some versions of the story, he explained, the lady presides over the British island of Avalon, where Arthur is sent to heal his wounds.

“The whole thing [in the mythology] is that [Arthur] will return in our time of need,” Babcock said. “He is supposed to die and come back.”

DON BOLLES BAILBOND AND LEGAL DEFENSE FUND

from Nora Keyes:

“This past Wednesday night [April 4] Don Bolles suffered a bizarre and unfortunate interception with the Newport Police Department. He was stopped for a broken tail light. We believe his unconventional looks and old army green van made him the victim of police profiling in this very affluent, quiet town. They searched his van. The only thing they found was a bottle of Dr Bronner’s soap.

“If you are a good friend of Don’s, you know this is the only cleaning agent he uses for every thing from tooth paste to laundry detergent. The police ran a drug field test on the soap and it came up positive. Dr. Bronner’s is made with hemp seed oil. Maybe this is the reason behind the arresting officer’s error. I spoke with someone who is familiar with forensic drug tests. They said the field test is not absolutely accurate. There are two other drug tests that need to be conducted on the soap. Also, the drug they are ascertaining that Don is in possession of is unusable in a soap base.

“He is being charged with a felony. His bail is $25,000. He could get up to 20 years in prison. This is very serious. Through a bail bonds company it is $2,500. Currently we have roughly $1,000. He is now being held at the Orange County jail. This is not a safe place for Don.

“With all my heart I do believe Don is innocent. I talked to the Police yesterday at the holding facility. Their attitude was harsh. This is truly a horrible and sad incident. I spoke with Don a number of times. He is in utter disbelief that this is happening to him. We are asking friends if they could make a contribution of 10-20 dollars or more to help get him out of jail as soon as possible so he can seek legal assistance.

“Please make contributions to the paypal account below. Also, if anyone knows of a lawyer that can donate their services, please contact me as soon as possible. I spoke with criminal lawyers yesterday and their fees are unbelievably high. Please repost this on your bulletin if your network of friends can help.

1. DON’T FREAK OUT BUT…

Something stupid happened to Arthur magazine “Do the Math” columnist/motorcyclist/writer/”Defend Brooklyn” creator Dave Reeves late last year in Burbank and now he’s being tickled by the Burbank D.A. for fines, probation and even a jailing on some bogus-on-their-face criminal charges. Call it weird, call it harassment-by-cop, call it Kafkatime: whatever name you hang on this cruel mess, it is  expensive and is requiring legal services at a level far above Dave’s means. He’s in a jam now and he needs — and deserves — our support during this nightmare. Help our brother out. Defend Dave Reeves like he’s defended you — order something off his website

Thanks.
