Warmest greetings to you,

In the spirit of the solstice holiday season and all that, we’ve posted online the complete text of Erik Davis’s acclaimed, epic profile of harper/singer Joanna Newsom, published in the current issue of Arthur.  If you haven’t been able to find a copy of the mag, here’s your chance to read the article — or forward it to someone else — without having to download the 3-part PDF and squint at your computer screen and all that nonsense. Put it in your pipe and smoke it, if you like:

Glad tidings,

1. EXCERPT FROM FORMER BLACK FLAG BASSIST CHUCK DUKOWSKI INTERVIEW IN ARTHUR NO. 25:

“The people in power don’t want to have places where young people can get together easily in any numbers, to associate and trade ideas and have some community besides the schools where they’re super-segregated and super-repressed. I remember when Chief Davis, the former LAPD police chief, said in an interview, ‘What you need to do is bear down on them when they’re young. You break them like a horse and then you can ride them the rest of their lives.’

“I think it was Davis, maybe it was his predecessor, but I remember reading that in the damn paper! Motherfuck! It was something that I, on the outside of things, had been thinking was going on, and now I realized that that WAS what was going on. We’d go do our [Black Flag] concert, come outside and see the cops beating up all the people who came to hear us. They’d bust them all up, breaking legs and arms. Just beating the crap out of people. It was all about keeping people down and showing them who’s boss before they get a chance to feel like they can do something with their lives.

“About a year and a half ago, I went to a friend’s party where he had these Jarocho musicians playing. The music is from the Veracruz part of Mexico, it’s a kind of music that’s African and indigenous. These groups are made up of extended families. So the whole group, this extended family, is performing in different combinations and different groups, from the oldest people to the youngest: everybody’s getting their little cameos, everybody’s playing support to everybody else or taking a moment where they’re the ‘star,’ so to speak. What was interesting to me was the breakdown of the ageism. Everybody was participating in it. I started thinking that this is probably closer to where people are coming from, naturally.

“The division by age is probably on purpose. There’s always a desire to divide and pit various groups in the culture against one another, and thereby weaken any chance of people getting together and coming up with alternatives to the governmental infrastructure for holding things together, and the giant corporations and things that hire them. It’s like at school, where they line everybody up by age, and then have them line up by height, or make them learn to march in lines: all of this kind of programming and dividing people up, and ultimately pitting them against one another, is so that they’re easier to control. It’s so much easier to take advantage of somebody who is denied the insights of their forebears. It’s so much easier to take advantage of somebody if they are robbed of the energy of their offspring. I think you need to keep everybody engaged with each other, and then the culture is rich, and has the life and vitality of the whole human family that’s there.”

3. IT’S HOLY MODAL WEEKEND JAN. 5-7, 2007 IN PDX

“The Holy Modal Rounders …. Bound to Lose”: a documentary film by Sam Wainwright Douglas, Paul Lovelace, Jesse Fisher and Francis Hatch

When fiddler Peter Stampfel collided with guitarist Steve Weber during the “Great Folk Scare” of the early sixties in New York, the two musicians formed a powerful bond based on their shared fascination with American roots music and early psychedelia. Dubbing themselves The Holy Modal Rounders, these eccentric outsiders have drawn a dedicated following of luminaries and lunatics.

From their origins in New York’s Greenwich Village folk scene and their involvement in the Easy Rider soundtrack, to the lost years of constant drugging, endless touring and a final shot at redemption, The Holy Modal Rounders Bound To Lose recounts the unique forty-year history of these true American originals. With startling intimacy, the film also documents the band’s arduous, amusing, and sometimes heartbreaking struggle to capitalize on their recent resurgence in popularity, culminating in an unpredictable 40th anniversary concert in Portland, Oregon.

More than just a chronicle of an obscure band, The Holy Modal Rounders Bound To Lose is a raucous celebration of a lost American outlaw subculture as it draws its final rebellious breaths.

Bound to Lose features endearing and hilarious  appearances by playwright (and former Rounders drummer) Sam Shepard, Dennis Hopper, John Sebastian of The Lovin’ Spoonful, Peter Tork of the Monkees, The Fugs, Loudon Wainwright III, Dave Van Ronk, Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Wavy Gravy and many many more.

8. THEY’RE STILL TRYING TO BURY ‘IDIOCRACY’

“Idiocracy,” the super-vicious feature film satire by Mike Judge (Office Space, Beavis and Butthead, King of the Hill)  that we’ve been championing since we first lucked into seeing it, is finally coming to DVD after its suspiciously limited theatrical release a few months ago. (How limited? It NEVER screened in New York. Or San Francisco.)

But the DVD’s not out until January — in other words, just after the holiday season, when nobody is paying attention and nobody has any money to spend anyways. The film is being buried a second time. Could it have something to do with the way that the film explicitly, mercilessly mocks corporations like Carl’s Jr., Starbucks, CostCo, Gatorade, H & R Block and (lest we forget) Fuddruckers?

The Judge camp still isn’t talking about what exactly is going down with this film, but… well, seems like some high-level calls were made or something. Anyways, if you pre-order a copy through this link, Arthur earns a few Amapennies:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K7VHOG?ie=UTF8&tag=barbelith&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000K7VHOG

9. THE BEST THING WE HEARD ALL YEAR…(And we do mean all year.)

Bob Dylan’s sparkling, witty “Theme Time Radio Hour” wherein he jokes, fibs and spiels between cuts all centered round a single topic (“Mom,” “Tennessee,” “Dogs,” “Jail”, etc). You probably can guess that each (weekly) show has been a true treasure box of song, history and character. But did you know that every show to date has been archived by some wonderful collector for easy download? Check it out:

A correction to our ‘Golden Apples of the Sun CD is sold out’ announcement in the last bulletin:

The egg’s on our face.

We’re selling them at $12US/$14Ca/$17World postpaid until they’re gone.

INFO:

“Golden Apples of the Sun” is an April 2004 compilation of current underground folk music, as selected by Devendra Banhart. Features artwork and handlettering by Devendra on cover, back cover, sleeve, tray and the disk itself.

Some praise for this album:

“The list of names (Vetiver, Espers, Joanna Newsom, Antony, etc) gathered on Devendra Banhart’s compilation of ‘underground folk artists’ for the totally-free US counter-culture bimonthly Arthur now reads like an astonishingly prescient list of 2006’s big musical talents. Two years on, the CD still works as a joyous trip through the hollow and hilly lands of the senses, down into the genre’s core.” – Andrew Male, Mojo (Dec 2006)

“The standard [nouveau folk movement] compilation for beginners…” – Ari Spool, The Stranger (30 Nov 2006)

“Essential.” — Mojo (September 2004)

“Sparkling.” — The Wire (July 2004)

“8.6 (out of 10): [Its] sprawling landscape presents a persuasive case for the depth of a scene that seemingly sprung up (like mushrooms) overnight.” Pitchfork (8 July 2004)

Complete album running order:

1. Vetiver (with Hope Sandoval) – “Angel’s Share” (from the “Vetiver” LP)

2. Joanna Newsom – “Bridges and Balloons” (from “The Milk-Eyed Mender” LP)

1. FINALLY AVAILABLE AFTER A DIFFICULT BIRTH… ARTHUR NO. 25.

Geez Louise, sorry dudes for the delay, but it’s here now. This issue features:

* An epic-length profile of California harper JOANNA NEWSOM by author Erik Davis, with exclusive photos of her geniushood by Eden Batki. When we started ARTHUR back in 2002, this was EXACTLY the kind of article we were hoping to run regularly: a feature about an exciting contemporary or historical artist, written by a fantastic writer, photographed by a on-it photographer, at a length, depth, tone and approach appropriate to the subject. We are beyond pleased to have the privilege of publishing this 11,000-word-plus piece. Dig it.

* “Bog Venus vs. Nazi Cock-Ring: Some Thoughts Concerning Pornography” by author ALAN MOORE (Watchmen, From Hell, V for Vendetta, Lost Girls). This is a brand-new,  eight-page, 12,000-word essay/manifesto from Mr. Moore (cover star of Arthur No. 4 back in 2003!), profusely illustrated with appropriately bawdy imagery, surveying TWENTY-FIVE THOUSAND YEARS OF PORNOGRAPHY in the Western world — a hairy-palmed story of the sexual imagination that ranges from the Venus of Willendorf to “Anal Virgins IV,” with appearances by Greek sculptors, Roman muralists, Dark Age Christians, Chaucer, Shakespeare, de Sade, William Blake, Victorian pornographic playlets and periodicals, Swinburne, J.K. Huysmans, Annie Besant, Ernest Dowson, Oscar Wilde, Aubrey Beardsley, early 20th-century German devices to keep pubescent boys from having wet dreams, “Tijuana Bibles,” Maurice Girodias’s Olympia Press, D.H. Lawrence, W.S. Burroughs, Harvey Kurtzman, City Light Books, Allen Ginsberg, Ed Sanders, Lenore Kandel, David Meltzer, Charles Bukowski, Barney Rossett’s Grove Press, Philip Jose Farmer, Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, Sharon Rudahl (aka Mary Sativa), Spain, Traci Lords, “Deep Throat,” “Off Our Backs,” Britneyh Spears, Simone de Beauvoir, Andrea Dworkin, Russ Meyer and Kitten Natividad, Kathy Acker, Angela Carter and Felicien Rops. Amongst others. We think this is a landmark piece, and are, again, grateful to be able to publish it in this time of relentless lame sexvertising and galloping militarism. We come in peace — over and over again.

* Kyp Malone of the courageous NYC rock band TV ON THE RADIO talks candidly with Arthur editor Jay Babcock about directly confronting USA malign negligence (Katrina) and rampant militarism — on record, on a recent tour with Nine Inch Nails and Bauhaus (military recruiting booths!?!), and most notoriously, onstage in public this past August in front of 12,000 people at Boston’s City Hall. If you were there, you know what we’re talking about. If you weren’t, please read this account of speaking truth to power.

* Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag, Chuck Dukowski Sextet) on the deeper, civilizational issues surrounding all-ages shows, illustrated by Geoff McFetridge. This is part 2 of our continuing series on ALL-AGES SHOWS.

* “New Herbalist” columnist MOLLY FRANCES on the pagan roots (and herbs) of Christmas…

* “Do the Math” columnist DAVE REEVES on why AK-47s beat M-16s.

* DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF on visionary thinker Robert Anton Wilson.

* LISA ANNE AUERBACHi’s Abbie Hoffman-inspired knitted sweaters photographed by Justine Kurland on the occasion of her show at White Columns…

5. ERIK DAVIS SPEAKS TO YOU THIS WEEK IN NEW YORK CITY.

Erik Davis, author of the Joanna Newsom story on the cover of the new Arthur, is in NYC this week for two speaking engagements:

a.

Visionary Art and Architecture: A Conversation between Alex Grey and Erik Davis

An evening event: Thursday, December 7th, 7pm, $20

Location: Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, 540 West 27th Street, 4th floor

“This evening, one of the world’s greatest contemporary visionary artists, NYC’s own renowned Alex Grey, and the San Francisco cultural critic Erik Davis will engage in a spirited dialogue about the role of visionary art and architecture. Grey will discuss the history of sacred art and the aspirations embedded in his own work, ranging from his extraordinary paintings and sculptures to his design of the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. Davis will draw from his brand new book, The Visionary State: A Journey through California’s Spiritual Landscape, which weaves deeply informed text and stunning images into a compelling narrative of religion, architecture and consciousness in California. Don’t miss this meeting of two dazzling minds.”

b..

The Visionary State: The Legacy of California Consciousness

Erik Davis

An evening lecture and slide presentation: Friday, December 8th, 8pm, $20

Location: NY Open Center, 83 Spring Street

“California has served as ground zero for an emerging spirituality based on ecology, the body and the technology of human transformation. The state’s ebullient spiritual landscape has spawned the likes of neopaganism, televangelism, UFO cults, austere Zen Buddhism, Esalen, mavericks such as Alan Watts and Aldous Huxley, popular visionaries such as Starhawk and Carlos Castaneda, and the nightmarish Charles Manson and Jim Jones. In this slideshow and talk, based on his fascinating new book, The Visionary State: A Journey through California’s Spiritual Landscape, Erik Davis will take us on a wild ride, exploring the history and legacy of ‘California consciousness.’”

6. IT’S BEATNIK BEACH FILM NIGHT IN SAN FRANCISCO.

Thursday, December 7, 2006

7:30 p.m. ’til 11 p.m.

Roxie Cinema

3117 16th Street at Valencia, San Francisco

(415) 431-3611

“Authors Domenic Priore and Brian Chidester (Beatsville, Smile: The Story of Brian Wilson’s Lost Masterpiece, Dumb Angel #4: All Summer Long) will present a unique one-hour slide show documenting the Beat Generation’s long stretch over the Greater Los Angeles area between 1956 and 1966, via visuals of coffeehouses and Jazz joints from the Sunset Strip to Malibu, Venice and Newport Beach.  Legendary locations only heard about in books or in liner notes, from the Gas House and nearby Venice West, to the Unicorn and Shelly’s Manne-Hole in Hollywood, the Lighthouse and Insomniac Cafe in Hermosa Beach, then all the way down to Cafe Frankenstein (owned, operated and painted by Burt Shonberg) in Laguna Beach.  Artists from John Altoon to Eric “Big Daddy” Nord gave these places a colourful splash, as did the wide variety of Folk singers and poets who performed on their stages.  Accompanying the slideshow will be a rare screening of Dirty Feet (1965), shot primarily at the Prison of Socrates coffeehouse in Balboa.  Special guests TBA and, there will be another short Beat film or two (including The Beat, a color one shot inside Venice West), plus a few new routines by San Francisco’s own Devil-Ettes to jazz the room.”

7. INDIGENOUS PEOPLES VERSUS CORPORATE GLOBALIZATION.

“With many of the planet’s remaining natural resources on indigenous lands, traditional indigenous practices of biodiversity preservation have, ironically, made these lands targets for global corporations seeking the last forests, genetic and plant materials, oil, and minerals to feed their unsustainable growth. But native peoples refuse to be victims. Their stories of resistance and growing success are inspirational.

“In the new book _Paradigm Wars:  Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance to Globalization_, best-selling author Jerry Mander (_Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television_) partners with one of the world’s most celebrated indigenous leaders, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, to gather powerful firsthand reports on a momentous collision of worldviews that pits the forces of economic globalization against the Earth’s indigenous peoples.

“Overfishing threatens catastrophe, study finds

By Marla Cone, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer -11:00 AM PST, November 2, 2006

“All of the world’s fishing stocks will collapse before mid-century, devastating food supplies, if overfishing and other human impacts continue at their current pace, according to a global study to be published Friday by a team of scientists from 12 academic institutions in five countries.

“Already, 29% of species that are fished — including bluefin tuna, Atlantic cod, Alaskan king crab, Pacific salmon and an array of California fisheries — have collapsed and the pace is accelerating, the report says.

“If present trends persist, the study predicts that “100% of [fished] species will collapse by the year 2048 or around that,” said marine conservation biologist Boris Worm at a press conference today. A fishery is considered collapsed if catches fall to 10% of historic highs. Worm, an assistant professor at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, led the team of researchers responsible for the report.

“In addition, ocean ecosystems will be unable to recover from shrinking populations of so many species of fish and other sea creatures, the scientists reported in the journal Science.

“The report is the first comprehensive assessment of the potential consequences of ongoing declines in the diversity of life in the world’s oceans. In recent years, marine scientists have warned about the extreme toll of overfishing in many regions, but the new report offers one of the most dismal predictions for the future of the world’s fisheries….”

7. IF YOU’RE IN NEW YORK SOMETIME BETWEEN NOV 9 AND DEC 23…

MATT GREENE’s new exhibition “Surrender” will be at Deitch Projects

November 09, 2006 — December 23, 2006

76 Grand Street, New York

http://www.deitchprojects.com/projects/sub.php?projId=196&orient=h

“Deitch Projects is pleased to present Surrender, an exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Matt Greene. This new suite of paintings is inspired by erotica and its screenic image as a vehicle to address formal concerns such as surface, color, and space.

“Known for his ethereal landscapes of fleshy fungi and bushy bombshells, Matt Greene continues in this series an exploration of his favorite shelves in the library: horticulture, vintage pornography, horror films, fairy tales, 19th Century Symbolist art, and of course the history of Modernism. These disparate interests—and the weighty themes of gender, sexuality, and epistemology that accompany them—Greene masterfully approaches in a hallucinatory, visionary manner allowing them to come together in phantasmagoric splendor on his canvases.”

7. DELTA AIRLINES: MAKING DARK TIMES EVEN DARKER.

From Chris of Philadelphia-based music band Espers:

“friends, especially musicians, please take a moment to read my rant about delta airlines. this was a very sad and alarming experience.

“espers went to LA over this past weekend to play a festival [Arthur Nights]. we flew out via delta airlines. usual policy states that you can carry a guitar on if it is in a soft case, as it will fit into overhead bins. we fly 10+ times a year for shows and carry on 2 acoustics, 2 electrics. sometimes we have to assure folks that it is ‘cool,’ as the agents at the very front gates can be unaware that it is ok to carry on, but it always works out. we always confirm this when tix are purchased as well as day of flight via phone call. we did all of this with delta.

“when we departed philadelphia, they had concerns but let us carry the instruments through security and left it to the discretion of the actual flight crew. this happens frequently and the flight crews are always accomodating and very helpful with stowing the guitars. basically, if there should be 100% no room, they ‘pink tag’ the guitar as they would a baby carraige and walk it down from boarding gate and hand-pack it in an area that isn’t back w/ the usual stuff. they unload and deliver by hand at the boarding gate upon exiting the plane.

“so

at LAX they would not even let us enter the terminal. this is all prior to going through the scanners, etc., right at the front desk for delta where you check in. we were told that the folks at the desk would have to clear it. so we went back and the agent said we’d have to buy a seat for a guitar. i asked to speak to the manager on duty and he came down and said that the only option was to check it in and put it under. i explained that we travelled many, many times per year via air and this had never been the case. he said ‘it is a dark world these days and policy like this is a result of it

‘ and refused an alternative. he also let me know that it was my choice to deal with him or security depending on how i ‘wanted to go about this..’  Meg, the owner of the guitar was in tears as she handed it to him and said ‘you really have no problem destroying a guitar??’ he said he would walk it himself to the plane, he put the pink tag on it and said it was indeed ensured for up

to $2500.

“on the plane, the crew noted that we should have been able to carry it on. in the delta terminal we noticed 2 other folks w/ guitars in soft cases that had cleared check in.

“the guitar did not get delivered at the boarding gate in philly. it came off of the belt with a large hole in it. this is the guitar that meg recorded the espers albums with, her solo work, plays live, etc.

“when we went to the office to flip out and make the claim, they said that it might not be ensured due to the fact it was in a soft case. we explained to them that policy stated it must be in soft case to carry on and told them our whole ride. they stated the policy like this:

– you CAN carry in instruments as long as they fit in the bins. they recommend soft cases to ensure this for larger instruments.

– guitars are too big.

– this policy is due to room concerns, not security.

“even the folks in the baggage dept were with us, stated that the policy was very grey and unclear. we experienced inconsistency from person-to-person, city-to-city within the delta organization. had there been firm practice, we would have happily obliged with proper cases and planning.

“musicians should avoid this airline at all costs. they were TERRIBLE and i’d hate to see this happen to other folks. please spread the word around and i apologize for the typos that are like all over the place in the above dispatch.

onward!

coots.”
