For anyone with a “thing” for old records in languages other than English, Jon Ward’s Excavated Shellac blog is the best site on the web, hands down. Every Sunday night, he posts a side of a lovely 78 rpm disc, recorded during the first half of the 20th century from various places across five continents. And it’s made available as free downloads in a spirit of open-hearted sharing. (There’s a fabulous mid-20s Syrian fiddle record featured this week.)
Recently, the dublab site has posted a great two-hour mp3 of Ward himself playing some great stuff, most of which hasn’t been included on ES before and best of all, he chats between tracks about the records and his interest in them. Just wonderful.

LOOKING for a MIAMI family who wants to start a SALON at home…

For almost six years, Fritz Haeg hosted a series of self-organized gatherings called Sundown Salon in his Los Angeles home, which features a geodesic dome, grounds with many garden spaces, and a subterranean cave. Past events included everything from crafting circles, gardening and cooking workshops, to live music and “pageantry, performances, shows, stunts and spectacles.” According to Haeg, “The salons provided an alternative model to the isolated solitary creator in the pure hermetic white box. Instead, the salon celebrated the truly engaged human, responding to their time, environment, community, friends, neighbors, weather, history, place.”
In 2006, he branched out to hosting these events in other like-minded venues around the world through his new project Sundown Schoolhouse [including an all-day indoor tent/workshop at Arthur Nights in October, 2006 —ed.]. He is now working with the Miami MOCA to find a household that would be equally excited host gatherings in their home as part of an exhibit, thereby helping to develop the project on a broader scale. For a project at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami, I am seeking the collaboration of an adventurous local family. They will organize and host a regular series of salon gatherings at their home during the run of the exhibition from May 21 – September 13, 2009. I will work with the family to strategize their new salon series, but the events will be entirely self-organized with guests of their choosing.

The making of a global village at Factor e Farm, Part 1
Recently my friend Molly pared down her belongings, stored what she couldn’t carry with her, and left Brooklyn for the fields of rural Missouri to help in the construction of Factor e Farm. The goal of the young farmer scientists who run Factor e farm is to create a replicable, modern, independent off-the-grid farming community or “global village.” So far they are constructing buildings with clay bricks made of the local soil, planting orchards and perennial vegetables, farming local fish, collecting rain water to drink, generating their own electricity from waste vegetable oil and solar power, and working towards creating a “Global Village Construction Set” that would list all the tools necessary to replicate their system once it is totally self sufficient.
The mind-blowing thing about this project is that anybody who wants to start a similar community can do so virtually for free on the outskirts of many cities in the United States. Right now, arable land is cheap. Hell, I heard that in North Dakota they are giving away land to anybody who wants it. I say to all those who are actually taking up this opportunity, all the power to you. The idea is, if you can generate the money to create the system, you will reap the benefits forever. This quote from Factor e farm pretty much sums up their vision:
We are after the creation of new society, one which has learned from the past and moves forward with ancient wisdom and modern technology.
