Our collective lack of sun worship has brought its bright and might down upon us – here, again, to cook up any unbikini’d nether region left out too long. Awoken from its slumber, The Shiney One’s appetite is seemingly unquenchable and it will stop at nothing to make your flesh more palatable. Come, get dehydrated, and join Ivy Meadows and Hairy Painter as they go on a magical and woozy journey through your skin, with fire!

This week Arthur Radio decided to set its boat out on a southward-flowing current, with special guests Pete Vogl and Willow Gibbons (who together make the musical duo Bow Ribbons) at the helm. We bid goodbye to the stone grey waves lapping around the edges of Manhattan, passed through the tepid manatee-filled waters of Florida, and traveled onwards until we reached the hot swells surrounding the coast of Brazil. The plan was to eventually catch up with a family of Humpback whales in Ecuador, to learn of their beautiful songs and hopefully join them in chorus.
We paused to relax on a calm patch of water by the beach, where tropical birds flitted about chirping messages to one another in nearby Pepper trees. Pete took out his guitar and sat next to Willow, who stood on the deck in the sunshine, ready to sing. Closing our eyes, we listened with the sun shimmering orange on our eyelids as Willow belted out the lines, “I will spend a lifetime in space, I will make a nest in this place…”

Last Sunday Arthur Radio embarked on its eighth voyage, this time to the wind-swept deserts of Greece, Morocco, Arizona and beyond… Special guest Robert Damore (aka Bobby Bouzouki) graced the Newtown Radio studio with the warm, nostalgia-inducing sounds of his bouzouki, and even took the time to tell us some of the narratives behind the rebetika (Greek folk songs) that he played during his set.
Before your journey begins, dear listeners, we have the following message to deliver from ye olde writing desk of DJ Hairy Painter…
The sun is here and opens the curtains slowly! It brings the slow glowing dust! It springs the earth out of polar jail, the winds blow the desert sand to make for better traction. If you sit, it will make your hair look sexier! The tectonic plates are shifting all around us, their quakes make the planet spin faster, and change the pitch! If you jump, you can land in buttes, the plateaus, or the Isle of Cyros! Through our earth’s muzak, the winds blow Bobby Bouzouki up to the Arthur radio treehouse for a jaunt upon rebetika mountain. Happy trials!

This Saturday, experimental sound-collagists and noise-makers Lucky Dragons and asDSSka will be performing a live score to the classic The Red Balloon at The Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles (co-presented by Dublab and L.A. Record). Recent performances I’ve seen by Lucky Dragons have been nothing less than magical, unifying experiences where audience members left with smiles beaming from ear to ear. Give yourself the treat of reflecting on this childhood film as the duo taps into your heart and mind in this special musical collaboration with the classically trained pianist Aska Matsumiya and David Scott Stone (The Sads, The Melvins). The film will be followed by a sing-a-long with the L.A. Ladies’ Choir.
