Arthur Radio Transmission #10 with live jam by Blondes

For Transmission #10 of Arthur Radio, we started by visualizing ourselves in a black void, lost in time somewhere between the 1970s and today. Using LED-powered building blocks, we constructed a musical pathway in order to make sense of our surroundings. Brick by colorful brick, we bridged the gap between the oily rainbow pools of German psychedelic krautrock jazziness all the way to the shimmering mists of other-worldly electronic noise being produced by the likes of contemporaries Jonas Reinhardt, Arp, Stellar Om Source, and our very special time-traveling guests, Blondes.

Standing on the other side of the bridge in the murky “now,” we found that transversing between the two realms was easier than we thought. In fact, it seemed that they were always connected by an invisible passage, for the electronic explorers of today were born of very same primordial space sludge that spawned krautrock pioneers Dorothea Raukes, Jean Michel Jarre, Manuel Göttsching and friends, some 40 years ago.

The following description was taken from the back of “The LYTE,” one of the very first audiovisualizers of its kind made in the 1980s. Its sentiment echoes how listening to Transmission #10 makes us feel, and we recommend that you meditate on it for a second before you take that irrevocable plunge, hit “play,” and start time-traveling on your own:

The written word cannot fully describe what the eye and ear can perceive. Tone by tone you see an exact, shimmering definition in light of what you hear. Exotic patterns are born, grow, contract and change shape through an infinity of dazzling complexity; each momentary image a precise electronic expression of the sound you hear…

Tuesday New Age Jams: A different sort of "mothership connection"

Swing down sweet chariot ...

To those not yet in the know, all the true heads check in at the Crystal Vibrations audioblog for the cream of the crop in Nuevo Age jammage. CV is Greg Davis‘ thing mostly, if we’re going on number of posts, and his thoroughness with regard to the history and cultural relevance of New Age music suggests that the man has curated a staggering collection of some of the most mundane sounds ever conceived. (Davis, if you don’t know, has been creating very pleasant albums of sorta tribal ambient electronic stuff since the early ’00s.)

Keeping that in mind, the truly hype shit when it comes to New Age tunes is outta this world, and stands out as even more of a treasure given the genre’s overarching treacly nature. A reclamation and a reappropriation of the blissfully soporific is in effect here, engineered by the aforementioned Davis, along with likeminded pals such as White Rainbow‘s Adam Forkner.

So yeah: We’re STOKED that he’s back with his first post since early April. Namely, to quote Davis, “a real soother” in the form of David Parsons’ 1980 album, Sounds of the Mothership. The awesome picture up top sums it up: The best possible version of “bidi-puffing white dude hanging out by a waterfall, getting mellow on the sitar” you can imagine. Plus the requisite Tangerine Dream-style warbling synth drones and occasional cricket chirp and birdsong. So chill.

Double Dose of Drone: White Rainbow, Windy & Carl in Los Angeles this weekend

Windy & Carl’s “Undercurrent” from their 2001 album, Depths.

Los Angeles hosts some of the best bands in the country this weekend (if one were to judge such things based on the soundsystem at Arthur’s Atwater office and distribution center) creating a real stumper when it comes to Friday night. If you forgot to snatch tickets for the Animal Collective/Grouper show at the Wiltern and you’re sitting out on the Brightblack show in Eagle Rock for some reason, then might we suggest you consider Windy & Carl along with White Rainbow on Friday at Synchronicity Space? Local avant-dub banana-peelers Sun Araw are also on the bill, which is good news. Here’s the details:

Who: Windy & Carl, White Rainbow, Nudge, Fantastic Sleep, and Sun Araw
Where: Synchronicity Space
4306 Melrose Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90029
When: Friday May 29, 8pm to 12am

Adam “White Rainbow” Forkner explains his music to Pauly Shore.

And in case you’re going to be at either the AC or BBML happenings on Friday (or if you’re coming down from Dublab’s Tonalism up in Big Sur), you can still gorge yourself on gentle granola drones as Windy & Carl and White Rainbow will be playing on Saturday afternoon at Echo Curio.

Echo Park, CA 90026
