Arthur Radio Transmission #30 w/ ALICE COHEN

Alice Cohen is a musician-animator, a wearer of various brightly-colored hats who has traversed many a terrain over the past 30 years, from Philly r&b songwriter to new wave frontwoman (of The Vels) to the present, where she is both a one-woman-band (her most recent LP “Walking Up Walls” was released on Olde English Spelling Bee in 2009) and the creator of many magical worlds in her meticulously collaged stop-motion animations, which draw from a palette of art deco interiors, vintage women’s fashion magazines, early hollywood memorabilia, abstract shapes, insects, birds, the moon, dream spaces and beyond.

She is currently working on music videos for Weekends, Linda Hagood, and Vomit Heat, and her video piece “Ear Candy” will be shown (in full big screen glory) as part of an experimental animation night at Anthology Film Archives on December 1st in NYC.

A cult hero revered in folk circles and beyond for his incredible ability to play seemingly any stringed instrument, Sandy Bull’s virtuosity was only matched by his technological curiosity and inclination towards experimentation, both in the studio and onstage. Often compared to contemporaries such as John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Bull’s music merges influences from the worlds of jazz, classical, Arabic, and Indian composition, yet always retains an immediately distinctive feel that comes across as both effortless and timeless. NO DEPOSIT, NO RETURN BLUES shines a light on Bull’s unconventional life, bringing forward many unknown stories, interviews with friends and admirers (Wavy Gravy, Hamza El Din, Bob Neuwirth), as well as long unheard recordings from different periods in his career. If you know Bull’s music you’ll want to see this film, and if his name is new to you then it will serve as the ultimate introduction.

A short portrait about KC’s grandmother (Sandy’s mom) Daphne Hellman. Daphne was a harpist in NYC who played everything from Bach to boogie woogie. The portrait traces Daphne’s life through stories of her career playing harp and of her several marriages to New York socialites. The film includes footage of Daphne and her long-time musical partner, Mr. Spoons, performing in the Subway.

Tickets are available at Anthology’s box office on the day of the show only. The box office opens 30 minutes before the first show of the day. There are no advance ticket sales. Reservations are available to Anthology members only.

June 19th through 21st – Bicycle Film Festival in NYC

This summer’s international Bicycle Film Festival will be held at Anthology Film Archives in New York from June 19th through 21st, featuring a smorgasbord of bicycle-related short films and feature-length movies from all over the world.

Short films range from a watercolor animation showing the director’s thoughts while riding her bicycle (Thoughts On My Bike), to a documentary about a group of friends from Trinidad who built “enormous stereo systems jerry-rigged onto ordinary BMX bikes” so that they could throw their neighborhood “an outrageous impromptu music and dance party on wheels” (Made in Queens).

Feature-lengths of note include Keirin Queen/Onna Keirn, a classic Japanese film about a girl from a small fishing town who trains to become a Keirin track queen, and Where Are You Go, a documentary about a cycling adventure across Africa:
