Comets On Fire/Growing jam session, Summer 2005, 60 mins
artwork by Arik Roper
From Ethan Miller’s Silver Currant blog…
“What I can remember about this session is that it was recorded during the daytime at our practice space on 3rd st. in San Francisco most likely between September 1st and the 3rd of 2005. Comets and Growing had toured the Midwest and Eastern U.S. together in June and July of that same year. This is just a few months later and Growing was out on the West Coast to play the first Arthurfest in Los Angeles which Comets also played…”

Arthur Radio Transmission #30 w/ ALICE COHEN
Above: Collage of spliced animation stills taken from Alice Cohen’s “Mirror Moves For Private Eyes” on Vimeo.
Alice Cohen is a musician-animator, a wearer of various brightly-colored hats who has traversed many a terrain over the past 30 years, from Philly r&b songwriter to new wave frontwoman (of The Vels) to the present, where she is both a one-woman-band (her most recent LP “Walking Up Walls” was released on Olde English Spelling Bee in 2009) and the creator of many magical worlds in her meticulously collaged stop-motion animations, which draw from a palette of art deco interiors, vintage women’s fashion magazines, early hollywood memorabilia, abstract shapes, insects, birds, the moon, dream spaces and beyond.
She is currently working on music videos for Weekends, Linda Hagood, and Vomit Heat, and her video piece “Ear Candy” will be shown (in full big screen glory) as part of an experimental animation night at Anthology Film Archives on December 1st in NYC.

Arthur Radio Transmission #29 w/ SONNY SMITH
…………:In which wanderlusting scribe, Sunsets’ smith, and all around luminous luminary Sonny Smith lands a jet plane in the Newtown laboratory/public swimming pool just in time to solo-ly saturate the airwaves with new tales of color, youth, wooing, and woe.
…………:In which prior airwave-saturators Ramble Tamble return to rotate a mighty fine short stack of vinyl diskettes at all the right speeds.
…………:In which Ivy Meadows unfurls a comfy sonic tablecloth upon the dewy green grassy grass grass for all tomorrows’ picnicings and dreamings.
…………And Hairy Painter rolls in the closing curtains with an iridescent cloud of sonic dust.

New aquarock: PURLING HISS "Run From the City"
Download: “Run From the City” – Purling Hiss (mp3)
[audio:http://www.arthurmag.com/magpie/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/01-Track-01.mp3%5DPurling Hiss is pig latin lover Mike Polizze of Philladelphia jammers Birds of Maya laying down some serious ’70s-style aquarock—it’s so submerged you feel like you’ve already got your earplugs in. Nah, that’s just the mix, bro. Right here is “Run From the City”—the title is a great tactical suggestion for contemporary coping; the song itself is, I dunno, Grand Funk meets Skynyrd in a thick cloud, recorded three rooms down. By accident. You can smell it more than you can hear it, if that makes any sense. From the Hiss’s third album Public Service Announcement, being released on vinyl and iTunes by the kind folk at Woodsist.

"Getting loose with losers": new anti-bar music from Peter Stampfel & Baby Gramps

Download: “Bar Bar” – Peter Stampfel & Baby Gramps
[audio:http://www.arthurmag.com/magpie/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/04-Track-04.m4a%5DGreat American human being Peter Stampfel teams with new-to-these-ears Portland, Oregon-based Old Timey old timer Baby Gramps for an album’s worth of cartoon-folk gitdowns, including this catchy anti-bar, anti-sports TV ditty. Sadly, Outertainment is not available on vinyl—you gotta settle for the cd, available from Red Newt Records or Amazon.
Extremely entertaining/insightful recent interview with Peter (“One reason I’m better now than then is that I was so mediocre back then”) by Greg Kot: Chicago Tribune
